Research Group Leader of the Laboratory of Developmental Cardiology

The Institute of Physiology of the Czech Academy of Sciences (Prague, Czech Republic) invites applications for the position of Research Group Leader of the Laboratory of Developmental Cardiology (

The candidate is expected to conduct an independent research according to his/her experience and goals in the field of cardiovascular research, which must be compatible with the current scientific goals of the Institute (see In particular, the candidate will be expected to perform studies using rodent models, advanced molecular and cell biology techniques, and functional assessment, also in collaboration with clinical scientists.  The candidate will be responsible for leading the current team of several scientists, postdoctoral and graduate students, and technicians.  The laboratory is well equipped to perform animal experiments,  ex vivo studies on rodent hearts, as well as in vitro studies using cultured cells. Research and salaries are covered by a combined budget including a standard support from the Institute as well as several grants from the scientists of the team.

In addition, selected candidate will be also supported by
(i) a three-year negotiable grant from the Institute, including salary, and
(ii) a collaborative EU-funded project: „National Institute for Metabolic and Cardiovascular Disease Research“ (

Eligibility:  Up to 12 years after PhD graduation (excluding maternity leave), as of 31 October 2023.

Selection criteria: Candidates will be selected on the basis of academic merit, i.e. the quality of their research proposal, publication record, and postdoctoral training. Intellectual independence, as documented by independent publications (corresponding author) or previous (grant) awards, will be an important asset. Previous experience in myocardial biology and cardiac function assessment is required. Securing additional funding is welcome but not required for this application. However, securing one's own grant(s) will be required to extend seed funding beyond the initial three years.

(ii) professional CV;

Stage 1 results will be announced by 30 November 2023.

Stage 2: Short-listed candidates will be invited to submit full proposals (max. 6 pages) and deliver a public lecture as part of their interview at the Institute of Physiology.

Successful candidate will be expected to take up his/her position before 30 June 2024.
