“The University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno is preparing a series of events to commemorate the 30th anniversary of 17 November 1989. The University is also commemorating the 100th anniversary of the start of teaching veterinary medicine in the Czech Republic, with this important day being 17 November 1919,” says the Rector, Alois Nečas.
All of the activities will take place between 1 and 29 of November 2019. On 12 November 2019, a ceremony will take place at the Kaunic student halls, commemorating not only 30 years since the “Velvet Revolution”, but especially 80 years since the tragic events of 1939. The Kaunic student halls, which belong to the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno, are a reminder of the tragic events that took place during World War II. On the same day, a ceremonial gathering will be held in the assembly hall of the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno, co-organized by MVDr. Alois Nečas, Ph.D., MBA, and students, and to which are invited as guests distinguished representatives of post-revolutionary politics and Brno dissidents, doc. Ph.Dr, Milan Uhde and prof. PhDr. Petr Fiala, Ph.D., LL.M. The aim of the gathering is to commemorate the November events in the university city of Brno and to hear the personal experiences of these famous personalities. This event will focus mainly on the students and the themes will be information about the roles of students in the events that took place around 17 November 1989. Students will have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions, in order to learn about what went on behind the scenes of the negotiations with the regime of the time.
The ceremonial gathering will be followed by a concert for students, at which the group LAKE MALAWI will perform in the sports hall of UVPS Brno. A comparison between what the university looked like and how lessons were taught 30 years ago and now will be given by an exhibition of photographs and artifacts with a veterinary theme entitled “Life at the University”, which will be open to the general public on the UVPS Brno campus from 12 to 29 November 2019. Celebration of the 100th anniversary of the start of teaching at the UVPS Brno and the 30th anniversary of the “Velvet Revolution” will also include an exhibition of insignia of the University, a ceremonial meeting of the Scientific Council of the UVPS Brno, a sports week for students the UVPS Brno, an international expert conference and an open day at the clinical workplaces of the UVPS Brno. The month of November celebrations will conclude with a gala concert by VIVA “LALALA” REPUBLIC for students, academics, employees and guests of the university at the Brno City Theater.
